We’re big on brunch over here. If you’re looking for a cute spot with bomb food made with locally grown ingredients and even better mimosa deals, then Kanela [Kuh-nel-uh] is where it’s at. The restaurant has five locations: Wicker Park, Lakeview, Old Town, Streeterville, and Andersonville being the newest one. The Andersonville location opened up about 4 months ago and already is serving up its reputation as a go-to brunch hangout.
The far north side is becoming more and more gentrified and Andersonville has made it to one of Chicago’s new “trendy” neighborhoods. I grew up and live in the area so we decided to check out what Kanela had to offer.
The restaurant is very cozy and gives you a cafe-like vibe. The exposed brick walls are covered in cool artwork and they even have a chalk wall with illustrations done by the staff. If you’re eating solo or don’t feel like grabbing a table, Kanela has a fully stocked bar with a TV.
The menu is Greek infused American breakfast and lunch, and the name Kanela itself means cinnamon in Greek. The mimosas are so good and would recommend getting a pitcher. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and made it hard to decide on one thing. We even scanned other tables and no one looked disappointed. The food is very fresh, light, and made with good ingredients. Kanela even has gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian options.
Safe to say we all left out satisfied and ready for a nap!
