Chicago hands down is the Mecca for summer music festivals. There’s always some kind of major event happening every weekend. From world renown festivals like Lollapalooza to the neighborhood street fests, SummerTimeChi is the lit place to be. This weekend Chicago hosts Pitchfork Music Festival starting today, July 15th, going through Sunday July 17th, and The Around The Way will be there providing ya’ll with coverage! Check out some of the artists we’re excited to see.
We love us some Mick Jenkins. The 25-year-old rapper from the Chi has bars for days as he speaks on social truths over tough beats you can cruise to. He’s collaborated with Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa, and has caught the attentions of greats like Timbaland for his breakout project The Water[s].
Not gonna lie, we just found out about Shamir a couple of days ago and it’s a shame because Shamir got them bangers boyy! He stepped into the scene back in 2014 with Northtown and has been receiving love ever since. His unique sound is a combination of R&B, rap, electronic and our favorite, house music. Definitely one to get you grovin’.
Moses Sumny is a work of art. His beautiful portraits are all over social media but we had no clue who he was until we recently discovered that he’s good friends with our big sis Solange. So out of curiosity (and envy because we want to be apart of her circle) we did some digging and came up on gold. Moses Sumny is pretty much a “one-man soul-folk orchestra” according to Spin magazine and they ain’t neva lied. His voice is so angelic.
The O.G’s of hip hop Digable Planets are back for their reunion and we’re all here for it! You might remember them from their 1993 hit single “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That).”
FKA twigs is such a badass and in a lane of her own. From what we’ve seen online she puts on one hell of a show as she vogues across the stage. We’re suckers for vogue-ing.
We loved both Late Nights the album and mixtpae, and still bump it today. Jeremih is just an all around talented indivdual and lets not forget he’s from Chicago!
What else is there to say other than… Miguel.
The first time we heard about Thundercat was when SZA released her amazing song “Sobriety,” produced by himself and various other producers. Since then he’s produced many tracks for the TDE crew such as Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy award winning song “These Walls” off of To Pimp A Butterfly. Not only does he produce but also has a soulful voice. The best way to describe his sound is a combo of funk, electronic, and soul.
Neon Indian is a cool electronic psychedelic band that we were vibing with back in ’09. We haven’t kept up with their new music but it’s hard to believe that they would fall off. Seeing them live will be a great way to get reacquainted.
Happy Pitchfork! Be Safe and have fun ya’ll!
