Phoenix Eats: Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles

Sundays always call for soul food and it was definitely calling our names last Sunday while my mom and I were in Phoenix. I’m a sucker for soul food. Even when I’m going through my healthy phase it is the only food I will make an exception for a cheat day. My mom on the other hand is a vegetarian and eats very light so when she said she was in the mood for soul food the heavens opened up.

Luckily for us, Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles was the closest soul food joint near us and just so happened to be the best soul food restaurant in Phoenix. Lo-Lo’s is a family owned restaurant that has been around for 12 years, however the founder, Larry “Lo-Lo” White, has worked in the soul food business since he was a kid at his grandmother’s restaurant. On a Sunday the restaurant is packed and has an average wait time of 30 minutes for a table. Don’t let that discourage you though. The restaurant has a comfy outdoor patio lounge where you can wait and make friends with other fellow hungry guests.

The interior design of Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles is a lot different than most traditional soul food restaurants I have been to. Usually the restaurants are pretty simple and have that southern dining hall feel to them. However, Lo-Lo’s is a mix between contemporary and  southern. The place is huge and has a lofty look to it with exposed pipes, brick walls and dope light fixtures. The walls are decked out in vintage images of historical Black figures, celebrity guests like Muhammad Ali, and family mementos.

The atmosphere is so pleasant it feels like home. You’re surrounded by families, couples, cute kids in dressed in their Sunday’s best, and everyone is happy. I’m sure it is because they know what amazing food is ahead of them. Seriously. UH-MAZ-ING. I ordered the Yo Mama’s Biscuits and Gravy and my mom ordered the Aunt Hattie’s Salmon Croquettes, which were both mouthwatering. Lo-Lo’s has options for vegetarians as well and breakfast is served all day!

Salmon croquettes with cheese eggs, grits & toast.
Two buttermilk biscuits smothered in country sausage gravy, served with two eggs and potatoes.

If you are ever in Phoenix or the surrounding areas check out one of their four locations. Highly recommended!
